The EMD SDL39 is a rare six-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between March 1969 and November 1972. It used the 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 engine of the GP39, rated at 2,300 horsepower, on a short 55-foot frame with C-C export trucks, weighing about 250,000 pounds with a light axle loading of 20.8 short tons. All ten were built for the Milwaukee Road, which wanted a lightweight road switcher to replace its ALCO RSC-2 fleet, and were numbered 581 to 590. Number 581 was wrecked at Sacred Heart, Minnesota, in 1983. The other nine passed to the Soo Line, then the Wisconsin Central, and after Canadian National absorbed that railroad they were returned to the lessor and sold to the Chilean freight operator FEPASA.
