The EMD SD9 is a six-axle diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from January 1954 to June 1959. An EMD 567C 16-cylinder engine generated 1,750 horsepower. It was the second model of the SD Special Duty line after the SD7, which was a lengthened GP7, and looks similar but has the improved and more maintainable 567C engine. American railroads bought 471 and a further 44 were produced for export. The classification lights, on a small pod canted outward, distinguish it from the SD7. Southern Pacific rebuilt 144 of its units into SD9E locomotives between 1970 and 1980, and many still work on shortlines.
