The EMD SD70MAC is the alternating-current traction version of the SD70 series of diesel-electric locomotives made by Electro-Motive Diesel. Production began in 1993, competing against the GE AC4400CW. Most units had the 4,000 horsepower EMD 710 prime mover, while later ones were rated at 4,300 horsepower and have SD45-style flared radiators. The Alaska Railroad ordered a version with head-end power so the locomotives could haul both freight and passenger trains. A total of 1,109 were built for Burlington Northern and its successor BNSF, Conrail, CSX, a Mexican railroad and the Alaska Railroad, before the SD70ACe replaced it in 2004.
