The EMD SD70M is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive of the SD70 series made by Electro-Motive Diesel, built from 1992 to 2004 with direct-current traction motors. It has a wide nose and the large comfort cab officially called the North American Safety Cab, and it uses D90TR traction motors and the 710G3B prime mover, giving 109,000 pounds-force of continuous tractive effort. From late 2001 it was built with SD45-style flared radiators for split cooling. Production ended in late 2004 as the SD70M-2 began, after 1,609 units. The vast majority went to Union Pacific, which ordered 1,000 in 2000, with others bought by Norfolk Southern, Southern Pacific and the New York, Susquehanna and Western.
