The EMD SD70 is a series of diesel-electric locomotives manufactured by Electro-Motive Diesel, an extension and improvement of the EMD SD60 series. Production began in late 1992 and over 5,700 units have been built, most of them SD70M, SD70MAC and SD70ACe models. Most were ordered for North America, but various models have served worldwide. All are hood units with C-C trucks, except the SD70ACe-P4 and SD70MACH, which have a B1-1B wheel arrangement, and the SD70ACe-BB, which is B+B-B+B. A bolsterless radial HTCR truck replaced the HTC truck on all SD70s built from 1992 to 2002, and from 2003 the lower-cost non-radial HTSC truck became standard on the SD70ACe and SD70M-2. The original SD70 of 1992 to 1999 had the smaller spartan cab, DC traction motors and a 4,000 horsepower 16-cylinder EMD 710 engine; 122 were built for Norfolk Southern, Conrail, Illinois Central and Southern Peru Copper. The article also covers rebuilds such as the SD70ACU and SD70ACC.
