EMD SD60

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD SD60 is a series of six-axle diesel-electric locomotives rated at 3,800 horsepower, built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division for heavy-duty drag freight and medium-speed freight service from 1984 to 1995. It looks almost identical to the SD50 but uses the new 16-cylinder EMD 710G3A prime mover and a computer-controlled electrical system. Chicago and North Western's railroad manual estimated that an SD60 was about three percent more fuel efficient than an SD50. The series includes the original hood-unit SD60, the full-width cowl SD60F built for Canadian National, the WhisperCab SD60I for Conrail, and the safety-cab SD60M. Norfolk Southern rebuilt many into SD60E locomotives.
