The EMD SD50 is a 3,600 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division, introduced in May 1981 as part of EMD's 50 Series, with production ending in January 1986. It was a transitional model between the Dash 2 series of the 1970s and the microprocessor-equipped SD60 and SD70. It used an updated V16 645 engine, uprated from the SD40-2's 3,000 horsepower to 3,500 horsepower and then to 3,600 in November 1984. Of 523 built, 421 were standard cab units for North America, 60 were built by GMD with a Draper taper, and 31 went to Saudi Arabia. The 50 series suffered engine and electrical problems that harmed EMD's reputation.
