The EMD SD40A is a diesel-electric road locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1969 and 1970, exclusively for the Illinois Central Railroad, which took all 18 units. EMD designed it by placing the SD40 on the longer frame of the SDP45, and that frame allowed a larger fuel tank of 5,000 gallons, which suited the Illinois Central use of the SD40A as a long-range road switcher. A 16-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine provides 3,000 horsepower. Illinois Central sold five units to Helm Financial in 1985, which were bought by the Soo Line, and sold one to National Railway Equipment in 1992; most of the others were rebuilt and reclassified as SD40-2R locomotives, losing their dynamic brakes. Canadian National retired the remaining units in 2010, and number 6014 is preserved by Railexco.
