The EMD SD38 is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from May 1967 to October 1971. Its EMD 645 16-cylinder engine generated 2,000 horsepower, compared with 3,000 horsepower from the turbocharged 645E3 of the SD40. Apart from its three-axle trucks and longer frame it was identical to the GP38. Fifty-two were built for American railroads, one for a Canadian railroad, four for a mining firm in Jamaica and seven for one in Venezuela, and 40 SDP38 passenger versions went to the Korean National Railroad. The SD38-2 of the Dash 2 line succeeded it.
