EMD SD32ECO

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD SD32ECO is a 3,150 horsepower C-C diesel-electric locomotive rebuilt by Electro-Motive Diesel, mainly by applying a conversion kit to an EMD SD60 or SD45-2 type locomotive. The existing 710G3A V16 prime mover is replaced by an EPA Tier II 710G3A-T2 turbocharged V12 with electronic fuel injection, many major components of the donor are recycled and recertified as equal to new, and the control system is entirely new. From 2011 Union Pacific sent twenty-eight SD60M units for the rebuild, designated SD59M-2 and known to the railroad as SD59MX, numbered 9900 to 9927 and mostly stored by 2023. BNSF had three SD45-2 locomotives rebuilt as SD32ECOs, numbered 1350 to 1352, which keep the look of an SD45-2.
