The EMD SD-units, called the SD series in German, are a family of six-axle diesel locomotives built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division of the United States. The German Wikipedia article explains that the series answered a limit of the four-axle GP series, whose axle load was too high for some lines: EMD offered a six-axle version of the GP design with a hood body, working platforms and a cab at one end, using the same 567 engine as the E and F series, later followed by the 645 and 710G engines. All units ride on two three-axle trucks with every axle driven, and SD stands for special duty. Early SD units sold less than the GP models because of the extra traction motors, but sales overtook them once outputs passed 3,000 horsepower. Individual models such as the SD7, SD40 and SD70 are separate entries.
