EMD NW5

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD NW5 is a 1,000 horsepower road switcher diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois, between December 1946 and February 1947. Thirteen were produced: ten went to the Great Northern Railway, two to the Union Belt of Detroit, and the last to the Southern Railway as number 2100. It took the hood, V12 EMD 567 prime mover and main generator of the NW2 switcher and placed them on a stretched frame carried on road trucks, with large fuel and water tanks between the trucks and a steam generator under a short hood to heat passenger cars. The layout is fundamentally the same idea as the ALCO RS-1, and the NW5 can be seen as EMD answer to it. All ten Great Northern units lasted until 1982 under Burlington Northern, and one Union Belt unit survives at the Florida Gulf Coast Railroad Museum.
