The EMD GP50 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from 1980 to 1985, with 278 examples produced. Its 16-cylinder EMD 645F3B engine produces between 3,500 and 3,600 horsepower. Chicago and North Western received the first units in the summer of 1980. It was the first production locomotive with EMD's Super Series wheelslip control, which used a Doppler radar unit to adjust power to each axle, and the first production series fitted with a microprocessor. It keeps the 59 feet 2 inches length of the GP38, GP39 and GP40. Norfolk Southern rebuilt 28 into GP33ECO locomotives.
