The EMD GP38 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1966 and December 1971. Its prime mover was a 16-cylinder EMD 645 engine rated at 2,000 horsepower, and 706 units were built for North American railroads. In 1972 EMD replaced it with the updated GP38-2 of the Dash-2 line. Many GP38s were later rebuilt to the equivalent of a GP38-2, and in 2007 Norfolk Southern rebuilt a former Penn Central unit into an experimental battery-electric locomotive. Several GP38s survive in preservation, including examples at the National Museum of Railroad History and Innovation in Baltimore.
