The EMD GP20 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from November 1959 to April 1962. Its 16-cylinder EMD 567D2 turbocharged engine produced 2,000 horsepower. EMD had been hesitant to turbocharge the 567 engine until successful tests by Union Pacific on its experimental Omaha GP20 units spurred it on. It was the second EMD production locomotive with an EMD turbocharger, sixteen months after the six-axle SD24, and 260 were built for American railroads. The first GP20 built, Western Pacific 2001, is preserved at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum at Portola, California.
