EMD GP18

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD GP18 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from December 1959 to November 1963. Its 16-cylinder 567D1 engine generated 1,800 horsepower, and it replaced the GP9 in the EMD catalog. Production comprised 350 units for American railroads, 40 for Mexican railroads, 12 for a Brazilian railroad, 2 for Peru and 1 for Saudi Arabia. It resembled the GP7 and GP9, but had a metal grid over its radiator shutters where those earlier models had a design described as chicken wire. Buyers could order high or low short hoods, dynamic brakes, and steam generators, as Grand Trunk Western did.
