The EMD F9 is a 1,750 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive produced from February 1953 to May 1960 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors and General Motors Diesel, and was the fifth model in EMD's F series of cab unit locomotives. It succeeded the F7, used a 16-cylinder 567C engine, and was also built at the GMD plant in London, Ontario. EMD built 248, made up of 92 A units and 156 cabless B units. By then railroads were turning to road switchers with better crew visibility, and the GP9 largely succeeded it. A late F7 differs from an F9 only by an extra filter grille on the A unit side panels.
