The EMD F3 is a 1,500 horsepower B-B freight and passenger carbody diesel locomotive produced by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from July 1945 to February 1949, with final assembly at La Grange, Illinois. It was the third model in EMD's F-unit series of cab unit locomotives and the second most produced of the series, with 1,106 cab-equipped A units and 694 cabless booster B units. A 16-cylinder 567B engine powered the locomotive, and with passenger gearing its maximum speed was 102 miles per hour. Historians group the A-unit carbodies into four phases, which differ in the number of portholes and in the grilles along the carbody.
