The EMD F2 was a freight-hauling diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between July 1946 and November 1946, a short production run. It succeeded the FT and was replaced by the F3, and was a transitional type: it kept the 1,350 horsepower D8 generator of the FT but had a revised carbody and internal layout that continued through the rest of the F-unit series. It introduced electric motors for radiator fans and traction motor blowers, powered by a companion alternator built into the main generator. EMD produced 74 cab-equipped A units and 30 cabless B units, and all F2 locomotives were scrapped.
