EMD F-units are a line of diesel-electric locomotives produced between November 1939 and November 1960 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and General Motors-Diesel Division, 7,642 in all, with final assembly at La Grange, Illinois, and London, Ontario. They went to railroads across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and a few were exported to Saudi Arabia. The F in each model number originally meant fourteen, as in 1,400 horsepower, not freight. Nearly all were B-B locomotives on Blomberg B trucks with a sixteen-cylinder EMD 567 two-stroke engine, built as carbody units with the body as a load-bearing truss and the bulldog nose. Models run from the FT of 1939 through the F3, F7 and F9 to the longer FP7 and FP9 and the FL9. They were the most successful first-generation road diesels in North America and largely displaced steam in road freight service.
