The EMD DD35 was a 5,000 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive of D-D wheel arrangement built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division for the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads. Thirty were built in 1963 and 1964, three for the Southern Pacific and twenty-seven for the Union Pacific, with a cab-equipped version, the DD35A, built for Union Pacific in 1965. Union Pacific had asked for a 15,000 horsepower three-unit set to replace its turbines, and EMD answered with a cabless booster that put the prime movers and electrical systems of two GP35 locomotives back to back on one frame riding on a pair of four-axle Flexicoil trucks. A demonstrator set of four units appeared in September 1963. The Southern Pacific units worked the Sunset Route and later transfer service in Los Angeles.
