The ALCO RSD-5 was a diesel-electric locomotive rated at 1,600 horsepower that rode on a pair of three-axle trucks in a C-C wheel arrangement. It was basically an upgraded version of the earlier RSD-4, used in much the same manner as the four-axle RS-3, with six motors that gave better tractive effort at lower speeds. The infobox of its article counts 204 built, 167 for the United States and 37 for Mexico. As of 2024 only two unrebuilt RSD-5s were known to exist: Chicago and North Western 1689, preserved and operational at the Illinois Railway Museum, and Utah Railway 306 at the Utah State Railroad Museum; two more survive as rebuilt RSD-12s.
