The ALCO RSD-39 was a six-axle, low-axle-weight diesel-electric locomotive built between 1965 and 1967 by the American Locomotive Company and, under licence, by Euskalduna in Spain. Renfe, the Spanish national railway, bought fifty of them, which it first numbered in the 1300 series and later renumbered as Class 313 when the UIC numbering rules changed. Only ten were built at Schenectady in the United States; the rest were made at Villaverde, Madrid, to cut the cost. They mainly hauled heavy ore trains between the Alquife mines and the port of Almería, and the last was withdrawn in 1997. Renfe's surplus units went abroad: eighteen to Comboios de Portugal in 1989, as Series 1320, and eighteen to Trenes de Buenos Aires in Argentina in 1995.
