ALCO Century Series locomotives

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Century Series was the line of road switcher diesel locomotives that ALCO introduced in Chicago on 29 January 1963 in a bid to win back ground from EMD and General Electric. It was a complete redesign of ALCO's road locomotive line, with the ALCO 251 engine, a redesigned air system, improved traction control and easier maintenance access. The model numbers give the axle count in the first digit and the rounded horsepower in the rest, as in the C420, C424, C425, C430, C628, C630 and C636, with the C415 switcher, the C855 twin engine units and the C643DH hydraulic drive units alongside. Production ran from 1963 to 1972, continuing at Montreal Locomotive Works and, under licence in Australia, at A E Goodwin after ALCO stopped building locomotives in 1969. In all, 841 locomotives were produced in eleven variants.
