The ALCO Century 636, or C636, was the most powerful single-engine diesel-electric locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company. It had a C-C wheel arrangement, 3,600 horsepower from the ALCO 251 prime mover and a new pair of high adhesion trucks called Hi-Ad. Between 1967 and 1968 Alco built 34 in Schenectady, New York, and a licensee, AE Goodwin, built 29 more in Australia from 1968 to 1970 for the Pilbara iron ore railroads. Despite many innovations the model struggled in the market after trouble with its demonstrator. As of March 2020 the only unrebuilt Alco-built C636 still in existence runs on the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad as number 3642.
