Avro Type G

Pioneer and Early Aviation Aircraft

The Avro Type G was a two-seat biplane that A.V. Roe designed for the 1912 British Military Aeroplane Competition. It had a fully enclosed crew compartment, with a fuselage filling the whole gap between the upper and lower wings, and wings of Roe's characteristic high aspect ratio. Two prototypes were begun, one with a Green engine and one with an ABC engine, but the ABC engine was not delivered in time and the second prototype was abandoned. In the trials it was assembled in 14 and a half minutes and did well in the fuel consumption tests, though a poor rate of climb kept it from a major prize and Avro was awarded 100 pounds. It later set a British endurance record of 7 hours and 31 minutes, and it is remembered as the first aircraft to recover from a spin in front of witnesses.
