Avro Burga

Pioneer and Early Aviation Aircraft

The Avro Burga was built by Avro for Lieutenant R.F. Burga of the Peruvian Navy to test his unusual system of lateral control, using two rudder-like surfaces mounted near the centre of gravity at right angles to the wings, one above and one below the fuselage, instead of wing warping or ailerons. It was a single-engined two-seat monoplane built at Avro's Manchester factory alongside the prototype Avro Type E biplane, sharing its tail unit and undercarriage, with a more slender fuselage and a lighter 50 hp Gnome rotary engine. It was test flown at Shoreham, where the Avro School had moved in August 1912, and made its first flight on 20 November 1912 piloted by H.R. Simms.
