Avro 514

Pioneer and Early Aviation Aircraft

The Avro 514 was a single-seat British biplane built by Avro in 1914 as a racing rebuild of the Avro 511. For the Aerial Derby race round London the wings of the 511 were replaced with a strengthened pair, the aircraft was given a lighter undercarriage and its fuselage was reshaped with a V form for better aerodynamics, and in May 1914 it was renamed the 514. On the taxi from the Avro works at Brooklands towards Hendon, the starting field of the race, it suffered a technical fault and could not take part. The damage was repaired and the machine flew once more in July 1914, but the outbreak of the First World War ended any further development of the type.
