The Avro 533 Manchester was a First World War-era twin-engine biplane photo-reconnaissance and bomber aircraft designed and manufactured by Avro, and is a different aircraft from the Second World War Avro Manchester. It was a development of the earlier 523 and 529A, first called the Avro 529B, with a redesign in July 1918 giving the 533 number. When the intended 320 hp ABC Dragonfly engines were unavailable, 300 hp Siddeley Pumas were fitted to the second prototype, the 533A Manchester Mk II, which first flew in December 1918. The Dragonfly-engined Mk I followed in December 1919. Lower performance than hoped led Avro to abandon the third prototype, a 537 airliner proposal was dropped, and all the prototypes were scrapped.
