RMS Majestic began as SS Bismarck, the third and largest of the Hamburg America Line's Imperator-class trio of liners, launched on 20 June 1914 at the Blohm and Voss shipyard but never completed under German ownership because construction was halted by the First World War, and she sailed under the German flag only briefly during 1922 sea trials. Handed to Britain as war reparations, she entered service as the White Star Line's RMS Majestic on her maiden voyage on 11 May 1922, and at 56,551 gross register tons she was the largest ship the White Star Line ever operated under its own flag, remaining the largest ship in the world until the SS Normandie surpassed her in 1935. She was converted into the Royal Navy training ship HMS Caledonia in 1937, caught fire and sank at her moorings on 29 September 1939, and was subsequently scrapped by 1944.
