The SS Rotterdam, completed in 1959 for the Holland America Line, was a transatlantic ocean liner and later cruise ship notable for its funnel-less design, in which twin uptakes were split and routed to the sides of the superstructure to keep exhaust smoke away from the open decks. Built as the line's flagship for the Rotterdam to New York crossing, she carried passengers in both liner and, as jet travel reduced demand for ocean crossings, cruise service, and her spacious public rooms and innovative machinery arrangement were widely admired at the time of her launch. She remained in active service for more than three decades before her eventual retirement, and the ship survives today preserved as a floating hotel and museum in Rotterdam harbor.
