Teutonic-class ocean liner

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

The Teutonic class was a pair of steam passenger liners, Teutonic and Majestic, built by Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line and launched in 1889. They were ordered in the late 1880s to compete for the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing, with a target service speed of twenty knots, and White Star arranged government support for the building on condition that the Royal Navy could take the ships over in wartime. They were called the first modern liners because they offered a middle class of accommodation between saloon and steerage and relied on twin propellers rather than sails for their main propulsion. Teutonic appeared at the 1889 Spithead naval review in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and both ships later served as armed merchant cruisers or troop transports. They were the last White Star liners to contend for the Blue Riband and were replaced on the Atlantic run by the Olympic class.
