SS Volendam

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

SS Volendam was a Dutch-owned transatlantic liner built for the Holland America Line by Harland and Wolff at its Govan shipyard in Glasgow as yard number 649, launched on 6 July 1922 and completed that October. She and her sister Veendam were the line's first turbine-powered steamships and its largest until Statendam in 1929. Measuring 15,434 gross register tons, she had two screws driven by two high-pressure and two low-pressure turbines through single-reduction gearing, giving 15 knots. She mostly ran between Rotterdam and Hoboken and made seasonal cruises to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Norway. In the Second World War she evacuated refugees, including children from Britain, until two torpedoes damaged her in 1940, and in 1941 she became a troop ship. From 1947 she carried emigrants, and in 1948 she returned to transatlantic service offering budget travel to students. She was scrapped in the Netherlands in 1952.
