SS Rotterdam was a steam ocean liner built for the Holland America Line by Harland and Wolff in Belfast as yard number 390 on slipway number 3, laid down on 6 November 1906, launched on 3 March 1908 and completed in June that year, when she reached 16 knots on her sea trials. She measured 24,149 gross register tons, had twin quadruple expansion steam engines driving twin screws, and two funnels and two masts. Her berths for 3,340 passengers were split between 525 in first class, 515 in second and 2,400 in third. Until Statendam entered service in 1929 she was the largest and swiftest ship in the company fleet and its flagship, the fourth of seven company ships named after the Dutch city. In August 1914 she repatriated many American civilians from Germany and Switzerland. She was scrapped in the Netherlands in 1940.
