SS Amerika (1905)

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

SS Amerika was a transatlantic ocean liner launched on 20 April 1905 at Belfast by Harland and Wolff for the Hamburg America Line of Germany. A steel-hulled, twin-screw steam passenger liner of 22,622 gross register tons, she entered service in the autumn of 1905 on the route between Hamburg and New York, calling at Cherbourg. She was in Boston at the start of the First World War and stayed there for three years until the United States seized her in 1917. As USS America she carried almost 40,000 troops to France and sank at her mooring in Hoboken in 1918 before being raised. She later served United States Lines on the North Atlantic, was placed in reserve, and was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Company in January 1957 and broken up.
