RMS Republic was a steam-powered ocean liner built in 1903 by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, launched in February 1903 as Columbus for the Dominion Line before passing to the White Star Line, where she became flagship of the Boston service. She was known as the Millionaires' Ship for the wealthy Americans who travelled by her. On 23 January 1909, in thick fog off Nantucket, she collided with the SS Florida and sank the next day. Her Marconi wireless transmitter sent a CQD distress call, and about 1,500 people were saved, the first major marine rescue made possible by radio. At 15,378 tons she was the largest ship to have sunk until then, and her wreck was found in 1981.
