RMS Empress of Britain (1930)

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

RMS Empress of Britain was a steam turbine ocean liner built at the John Brown & Company yard in Clydebank between 1928 and 1931 for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which ran her between Southampton and Quebec and on winter cruises. Her keel was laid in November 1928, the Prince of Wales launched her on 11 June 1930, and she entered service in May 1931. Twelve geared steam turbines drove four propellers, giving a service speed of about 24 knots that made her the fastest ship from England to Canada, and at 42,348 gross register tons she was among the largest liners of her day. She was torpedoed and sunk on 28 October 1940, one of the largest liners lost in the Second World War and the largest ship sunk by a U-boat.
