RMS Berengaria began life as SS Imperator, a German ocean liner built by AG Vulcan Stettin for the Hamburg America Line and launched on 23 May 1912, which on her completion in June 1913 became the largest passenger ship in the world, surpassing the White Star liner Olympic. Imperator served only about 14 months on the North Atlantic before the outbreak of the First World War left her laid up in Hamburg for more than four years, after which she briefly carried American troops home as USS Imperator before being handed to Britain's Cunard Line as war reparations for the sunk RMS Lusitania and renamed Berengaria. As Cunard's flagship through much of the 1920s and 1930s, Berengaria was eventually retired because of aging electrical systems and scrapped between 1939 and 1946.
