SS Andrea Doria was an Italian ocean liner built as the flagship of the Italian Line, entering service in 1953 on the route between Genoa and New York and celebrated for its modern styling and onboard artwork representing postwar Italian design. In 1956, while nearing the end of a transatlantic crossing, she collided in fog with the Swedish liner MS Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket and sank the next day, an accident that killed dozens of people but became especially notable for the large-scale, largely successful rescue of the great majority of those aboard.
