Dornier Libelle

Flying Boats and Seaplanes

The Dornier Libelle, also designated Do A and meaning Dragonfly, was a small German flying boat of the 1920s built by Dornier. It was an open-cockpit, all-metal parasol-wing monoplane with partly fabric-covered wings. The seaplane came in a prototype, a standard first version and an improved Libelle II, and the same airframe was also built without sponsons and with a fixed tailwheel undercarriage as the landplane Dornier Spatz. The Libelle I carried a crew of one and two passengers on a single 45 kW radial engine. A Libelle II built in 1925 and used in Fiji survives in the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
