Sikorsky S-39

Flying Boats and Seaplanes

The Sikorsky S-39 is an American light amphibious aircraft that Sikorsky Aircraft produced in the early 1930s, a smaller, single-engine version of the S-38 powered by a 300-horsepower Pratt and Whitney Wasp Junior radial engine. Filmmakers Martin and Osa Johnson used a giraffe-patterned S-39 named Spirit of Africa, with a zebra-striped S-38 named Osas Ark, to explore Africa and make safari films and books. One example went to the US Army Air Corps, and a surviving aircraft was restored by Dick Jackson and flew in 2003.
