Lambretta is an Italian motor scooter brand built by Innocenti, introduced in 1947 in the same early postwar period as its principal rival, the Vespa, and built around a tubular steel chassis with bodywork panels that, unlike the Vespa's fully enclosed body, left more of the scooter's mechanical structure visible on certain models. Built to provide affordable, practical personal transport for a war-damaged Italian economy where fuel efficiency and low cost mattered more than performance, Lambretta scooters became closely associated, particularly in Britain, with the 1960s mod youth subculture, whose members customized their scooters with extensive chrome trim and multiple mirrors. Innocenti ceased Lambretta production in Italy in 1972, though the brand and various tooling were later sold and production continued for a time in India and elsewhere under license.
