The BMW F 76 was a small tricycle delivery van that BMW made between 1932 and 1933 at its Eisenach plant, followed in 1933 by the F 79 version with a larger engine. The 3/15 van variant had sold poorly, with only 435 vehicles from May 1929 to February 1932, but the success of other makers' three-wheeled commercial vehicles during the Great Depression led BMW Munich to develop its own tricycle lorry in 1931, with a two-person bench seat and a single-cylinder motorcycle engine. Production began in autumn 1932 with a 200 cc engine, which meant it could be driven legally without a driving licence, at a price of RM 1,350; the 400 cc F 79 cost RM 1,500. The engines were single-cylinder four-stroke overhead valve units derived from the R 2 and R 4 motorcycles, and production of 600 units in total ended in 1934 because of low demand.
