The Kawasaki Z1000 is a four-cylinder motorcycle that Kawasaki introduced in 2003 with streetfighter or standard styling, reviving a name first used in 1977 when the 1,015 cc Z1000 superseded the 903 cc Z1 and Z900. The 2003 bike used a modified ZX-9R engine bored out by 2.2 mm for more low-rpm torque, a backbone frame that carries the engine as a stressed member, a 4-2-4 exhaust and a rear section borrowed from the ZX-6R 636. Compression damping on one fork leg and rebound on the other was a technique taken from dirt bikes. Kawasaki released an updated version in 2007 and a redesigned one for 2010, when an aluminium frame, a digital dashboard and a 1,043 cc engine arrived and ABS became standard, with a 40th anniversary special edition in 2013 and a further update for 2014. Australia was still selling a 2025 model.
