The BMW R 80 ST was a road-oriented BMW motorcycle, the street sister model of the R 80 G/S travel enduro. The main changes for road use were a 19 inch front wheel, road tyres and shorter suspension travel, which still gave far more ground clearance than classic BMW tourers; together with a weight of only 180 kilograms this made for dynamic handling. Apart from that the ST differed from the off-road model mainly in its front mudguard directly over the wheel and a headlamp and instrument unit shared with the R 45 and R 65. Its 797 cc boxer engine of 37 kilowatts (50 horsepower) came from the R 80/7. Only 5953 were built from 1982 to 1984, a niche model, and the classic R 80 and later R 100 R followed.
