BMW R 80

Motorcycles and Powered Two- and Three-Wheelers

The BMW R 80 was an unfaired naked motorcycle from BMW, the successor to the R 80/7 and the technical basis of the R 80 RT models of 1985 to 1995. It was the first boxer BMW able to run on unleaded petrol. Its boxer engine of 797 cc and 37 kilowatts (50 horsepower) at 6500 rpm came from the R 80/7, with the exhaust and intake tract optimised for a better torque curve, and the machine reached nearly 180 km/h, with consumption quoted as 4.6 litres per 100 km at a steady 90. Fork, front wheel and brakes came from the K 100. Built from 1985 to 1992 in 13,815 examples, 314 of them for authorities, it was succeeded by the R 80 R and the R 100 R with Paralever.
