The BMW R 26 was a single-cylinder BMW motorcycle built from 1956 to 1960. BMW announced the new series in a press release on 30 January 1956, moving its singles to the full swinging-arm chassis that the boxer models had received in 1955. It had a stronger engine than its predecessor, the R 25/3, and a welded steel tube frame with ball heads on the sides for sidecar use. At launch it cost 2150 marks, while the older R 25/3 was still listed at 1795, and in the middle of the two-wheeler crisis BMW could not repeat the sales of the R 25/3. The R 27, with 18 horsepower and a new elastic mounting of the engine and gearbox unit, replaced it in 1960.
