The Suzuki GSX-R1100 is a sport bike from Suzuki's GSX-R series produced from 1986 until 1998. Suzuki had built its reputation on two-strokes, then built its first large four-stroke bikes, the DOHC GS750 and GS400, for the American market in 1976, followed by the GS550, the GS1000 and, in 1980, a 16-valve DOHC engine that powered the GSX1100 range including the influential Suzuki Katana. When Honda introduced the VF750 Interceptor in 1983 and Kawasaki the GPZ900R Ninja in 1984, Suzuki was still selling powerful but heavy air-cooled 16-valve bikes, which is the background to the GSX-R series. The GSX-R1100 was replaced in 2001 by the GSX-R1000.
