The Suzuki GSX-R1000, often called the Gixxer, is a sports motorcycle made by Suzuki that was introduced in 2001 to replace the GSX-R1100. It is powered by a liquid-cooled 999 cc inline four-cylinder four-stroke engine, although the displacement was 988 cc from 2001 to 2004. The first model, the K1 and K2 of 2001, was not simply an enlarged GSX-R750: it shared the same mainframe, made of material 0.5 mm thicker, which Suzuki said raised torsional rigidity by 10 percent, and its engine was a redesigned GSX-R750 unit with a bigger bore, a longer stroke, new lower-crown pistons and a gear-driven counter balancer. It produced a claimed peak of 160 bhp at 9,500 rpm at the crank, with a redline of 12,000 rpm and a dry weight of 170 kg.
