BMW R90S

Motorcycles and Powered Two- and Three-Wheelers

The BMW R90S was a 900 cc sport motorcycle that BMW produced from 1973 to 1976, the flagship of the boxer-engined /6 range. BMW commissioned the designer Hans Muth to oversee it, and its two-tone paintwork, bikini fairing and new tail were meant to shrug off the image of BMW bikes as staid and utilitarian. The type 247 airhead engine was a pushrod OHV, two-valve, air-cooled flat-twin based on the R75/5 with a larger bore, giving 898 cc and 67 bhp (50 kW), with a five-speed gearbox and shaft final drive. Top speed was 124 mph (200 km/h), with the quarter mile in about 13.5 seconds and 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds. Twin 230 mm front discs, Dell'Orto carburettors and an adjustable hydraulic steering damper set it apart from other BMW boxers of the time.
